Cell Phones and Brain Cancer: American Academy of Pediatrics Endorses Cell Phone Right to Know Act, Bernstein Liebhard LLP Reports

 Amid growing concerns of a possible connection between cell phones and brain cancer, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has endorsed The Cell Phone Right to Know Act, H.R. 6358, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports. The Act, which is sponsored by Rep Dennis J. Kucinich of Ohio, provides for cell phone radiation warnings on mobile phones. It would also create a new national research program to study cell phones and health and require the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to update the outdated Specific Absorption Rate (SAR). In a letter to Rep. Kucinich informing him of the group’s endorsement, the AAP expressed concerns that exposure to cell phone radiation might be especially dangerous for pregnant woman and children.*

“We are in agreement with the AAP’s support for The Cell Phone Right to Know Act, especially in light of the growing body of research linking use of cell phones and brain tumors,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm that represents the victims of defective consumer products. Cell Phone Radiation Lawsuits

In October, the Italian Supreme Court ruled that a connection existed between cell phones and brain tumors, finding a causal link between a man’s heavy cell phone use and a tumor he developed. The Italian court’s finding is backed by a growing body of research that suggests long-term exposure to cell phone radiation increases the risk for brain tumors.** For example, the World Health Organization’s International Agency on Research for Cancer (IARC) classified cell phone radiation as possibly carcinogenic in May 2011, after the Interphone study found that using cell phones for as little as 30 minutes per day resulted in a 40% increased risk for a type of brain tumor called glioma.***

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently submitted a proposal to reevaluate cell phone radiation emission standards, something it has not done since 1996**** The U.S. Government Accountability Office (“GAO”) has criticized the current standards as being outdated compared to those of international regulatory agencies, and for failing to reflect the most recent research on cell phone radiation.
